Antique 1911/1930 “An American in Germany” Handmade Journal | One-of-a-Kind Upcycled Book Journal with Original Pages & Pockets

Over 95 years old and given an entirely new life.

This one-of-a-kind handmade journal was created from an antique copy of An American in Germany by E. E. Pattou, from Heath’s Modern Language Series, with copyright dates of 1911 and 1930.

The original book is nearly a century old, and I wanted to preserve as much of its history and character as possible. The original covers and selected interior pages have been incorporated into the journal, including beautifully aged pages, German language lessons, illustrations and the original title page.

I carefully deconstructed the antique book and rebuilt it as a spiral-bound writing and keepsake journal, combining pieces of the original book with fresh writing paper, colorful pages and handmade pockets.

Inside you’ll find a mix of blank pages for writing, original antique book pages, colorful paper and pockets for saving photographs, tickets, notes, receipts, postcards, stickers and other little treasures.

The original pages show the wonderful signs of a book that has survived for generations. You may find yellowing, discoloration, markings, worn edges and other imperfections. These are intentionally preserved rather than covered or repaired. They are part of the history of the book and one of my favorite things about creating journals from old books.

Because the original book is so old, signs of age and wear are expected and celebrated. Every mark, faded edge and aged page is part of the book's previous life.
